America’s economy needs a jump start to improve demand and encourage growth. Many communities in the First District have been hit hard by the global recession and are struggling to come back. As Congressman, I’ll make creating good-paying jobs for residents of the First District my highest priority in Washington.

Renewable sources of energy will clean up our environment and lessen our dependence on foreign sources of oil. We can’t wait on increasing our consumption of renewable energy. As your Congressman, I’ll work to create policies that will mandate greater use of alternative fuels in order to create a demand for green technology and green jobs in the First District.

America faces a backlog of $2.2 trillion in overdue infrastructure improvements to our crumbling roads and bridges.[1] Spending on these projects will make our nation stronger, improve the business climate, and provide jobs that cannot be outsourced. As your Congressman, I’ll fight to make sure the First District gets our fair share of funds to repair our roads and bridges and bring our mass transit systems up to date. I’ll work with Chicago’s leaders to extend the “L” to 130th Street and better integrate the CTA, Metra and Pace systems.

Chicago has historically been the nexus of the nation’s transportation network. Currently, we have a world-class airport, but we are lagging behind our foreign competitors in other forms of intercity transportation. We can reclaim our role as a transportation hub by building high-speed rail lines from Chicago to other major cities in the Midwest. As Congressman, I’ll fight for rail construction projects that will give us the transportation network of the 21st Century and provide jobs to residents of the First District.

Every child in our district deserves a quality education that prepares them for the jobs of the 21st Century. As your Congressman, I’ll work to make sure that our schools have the resources they need to educate every child to compete in the global economy, and I’ll work to make college affordable for all our children.
